Winter in the South of France

The French Riviera is synonymous with being the ultimate jet-set destination, boasting amazing beaches, chic towns, and fantastic shopping. However, its rise to fame was far more humble.  In the 19th century, British and Russian aristocracy put the region on the map as a winter health resort. Queen Victoria, Czar Alexander II, and the Prince of Wales—affectionately called Bertie by his mother and later to become King Edward VII—all enjoyed the winter season on the French Riviera.  Socialites began establishing residences there.
